Ancient Coins

Pieces of gold, silver and bronze that have survived over the course of centuries to millenia have traveled and weathered the course of time to be able to still be seen in the world today! Many numismatists and collectors from across the globe have found and preserved these beautiful pieces of ancient history to be seen by public eyes hundreds to thousands of years later. Isn’t it crazy to see a piece of currency used thousands of years before you were born?!

Ancient coins were struck not cast or minted like currency in the modern age which shows a distinct difference in the technology used hundreds to thousands of years ago versus today. Coins were struck from either bronze, orichalcum (an elemental variant of bronze), silver or gold. All of these coins, each of their own types, were worth different amounts depending on denomination and weight. Some coins were made with a combination of these different metals more times than not to try to pass the coin off as something that it wasn’t a.k.a. a forgery. This was done many times in ancient times and more times than not people got away with it. In modern times, it is referred to as a fouree or ancient forgery. The most common type of fouree would be a silver plated bronze coin mostly dupondii to mimic a denarius denomination or a gold plated silver coin mostly antoniniani to mimic an argenteus. Forgers got away with this more times than not because most people did not have scales so if it looked like it was real, people believed it! Nowadays, there are forgers all over the world not just for ancients and antiques, but for everything! People are told something is real when in reality, it is a fake. See how much things have changed over thousands of years?

Ancient Antiquities and Artifacts

You may ask yourself what is an ancient antiquity / artifact and what classifies it as such? What differs between the two to classify them as different topics of interest and study?

The preservation and conservation of ancient artifacts is a very intricate and delicate process that can take weeks, months to even years to restore them back to their original beauty when they were first crafted hundreds or even thousands of years ago!

The initial process of excavating these amazing antiquites and aritfacts from there resting places of over hundreds to thousands of years is a very tedious process because you never know what you’re going to uncover. This also takes a very skillful and delicate hand by trained archaeologists who have studied for years! Let alone all the various different tools and equipment used to be able to extract these artifacts without damaging them.

An antiquity or antique can be described as an object used in the past that is no longer used in modern times which is normally an object that is small and / or had an everyday purpose. An artifact can be described as an object of significant age that had a significant use such as battle or ceremony. Both are highly sought after by museums and collectors alike due to their intrinsic value and historical significance.

Obselete Currency Notes

Behold the currency of old! After hundreds to thousands of years of purely making currency out of precious metals, beginning around the 1700s in the United States, currency was printed on at first parchment and now in modern days, paper. An obselete currency note can be described as a printed currency bill or note that is no longer used and has no monetary value in society today. These are highly sought after by collectors not only for their antique value and historical significance but the beautiful artwork that is absolutely amazing!

Unlike with coins where it is moderately easy to create a forgery of one, one would think that making a counterfeit note would be a lot easier and in many cases, one would be right before a certain year. Before 1990, the only true way to tell the difference between a real and counterfeit note was raised printing and watermark. With today’s technology, creating counterfeit is even more difficult then it was a century ago or even a millenia ago due to one simple technique that is used all over the world in every kind of currency used in modern times.

Civil War / War of the States

Albeit one of the darkest times in all of American history, it would be even worse if we forgot it because we would be doomed to repeat the same mistake today. The CIvil War or in some places is referred to as the War of the States, was fought of many different issues including but not limited to slavery, money, territory, rights and so much more. “Fighting the same fight that we’re still fighting amongst ourselves… today.” - Denzel Washington Remember the Titans. There are many relics that were left behind by the brave soldiers who fought and died for history to remember them by and as such we should honor that memory by not making the same choices that led to such a disastrous outcome.

Since the dawn of civilization, we have written down our thoughts, feelings and stories. Throughout the millenia, there have been many different languages that have been written or inscribed by humans but for thousands of years, all writing was written in stone using an ancient form of writing implement. There were many different methods that were used to try to create the original form of paper such as papyrus or an ancient chinese process created by Cai Lun.

Books

Long before Gutenberg and the Printing Press, there were already printed and “published” books more than half a millenia before hand! Ancient China was the first place where the first physical books were printed in the 9th century! It’s crazy to think about how much more advanced the other side of the world was and in some cases, still is, than anywhere else on Earth! Old books are more vital than anything because they tell the stories of the past which hold historical value and information that has been almost entirely lost in the modern age. Thanks to preservationists and conservationists around the world and the growing technology of the modern age, many books have survived the course of time and have been restored back to the best possible quality!
